Apparently I drink a shitload of caffeine.

I found a neat little tool with a database of caffeine content of common drinks, and it’s more than a little frightening. I’ve known for a while that I tend to be tweaked to the gills all the time, especially at work. Whether that’s because I need it to function, or just because the coffee is there (and free, and delicious), is up for debate. Seriously though, look at the numbers, for the day:

- 2 x Starbucks 16oz Coffee @ 372 mg (we use starbucks coffee in the machine at work, and my mug is about 16 Oz, so this is pretty accurate): 744 mg

- 12 Oz (Sugar-free) Red Bull: 120 mg

It’s 11 in the damn morning, I woke up at 8:30 after a full night’s sleep, I’ve already ingested 864 mg of caffeine, and I’m not done for the day. No-Doz, the Long-Haul Trucker’s stay-awake pills of choice, are 200 mg a piece, so I’ve had the equivalent of more than 4 of them. Again, it’s only 11 in the morning, and this JitterTrain hasn’t brakes.

Not totally sure how I feel about this. It’s kind of neat to see it all laid out like that  (the Starbucks thing really surprised me, actually - ounce for ounce, it packs about three times the wallop of Red Bull), but according to Wikipedia, there’s nothing dangerous about the amount I’m drinking. Still, those numbers are so big that there’s no way this is a good idea.

  1. Caffeine is teh evil. I drank a lot of it when I worked night shift. And for years now I have had bad withdrawal headaches if I don’t have caffeine every day. I decided that needed to end. I figured I would have one last bad headache. I stopped cold turkey and had two horrible migraines in three days. One of the migraines was so bad that the before-migraine warning sign of having spots in my eyes temporarily blinded me out of one eye. It sucked.

I don’t drink caffeine now, and I think partly due to my “training” of working night shift and having to fight off sleep, I do really well at staying alert even on just a little sleep. Then again, I respect sleep a lot more now and tend to get about 8 hours per night.
